Description

Let's talk about this show here.

I watched cartoons every now and then as a child, but had little to no interest in them. Sure, Spongebob was funny, and so was Bugs Bunny, but I never developed the appreciation of cartoons at that time. 12 year-old me thought that cartoons are for kids, which is ridiculous because I was a kid. I'd rather watch documentaries such as BBC's Blue Planet and Walking With Dinosaurs, which the graphics of the latter is considered inferior in today's context. I shunned from talking about cartoons unless if I'm interested in it. For quite a while the only cartoon I was really obsessed with was Mr Bean the Animated Series, but that's probably because I grew up watching Mr Bean.

It all changed when I saw American Dragon for the first time in 2006 while visiting my relatives on Eid. I've seen at least two adverts on TV before but never saw it. The concept of a family of shape-shifting dragon was so interesting that the next day I began to form something similar in my head. A rip-off, basically. That was also how I got into world-building, which led me to draw more. Around the same time I developed an obsession with Ottoman mosque architecture, which until now my friends know me as the guy who draw mosques in class.

American Dragon prompted me to improve my English, because I surely can't write a decent story with broken sentences. It also got me thinking: Why do cartoon characters wear the same clothes, or clothes with similar colour scheme, all the time? The only cartoon I was aware of that has its characters change outfits almost every episode was Totally Spies. Of course the obvious reason is that it's convenient for the artists.

Speaking of clothes, one question was raised when I watched American Dragon: Where did Jake's clothes go when he turned into a dragon? Like, how? The same question asked by his father Jonathan in the final episode.

I love the texture on Jake and Haley's skintones

Actually, I think I may know why Johnathan asked that question about their clothes!

If you read some of the behind the scenes stuff, before the show had ~13episodes and a 3rd season cut, there were plans to reveal Jakes dad was a werewolf all along, and always went on "business trips" around the full moon, but the family never paid attention. They focused so much on their own secrets they never considered he could have one. You can kind of see the framework if you think about it: he threw the Jersey Devil off a cliff, barely lost a fight to 3 vampires, and his sister dated what's clearly a troll. A werewolf wanting to know how to keep its clothes when it transforms, super understandable. I could even see Lao Shi knowing and just assuming Susan knew all along.
